What causes Anxiety?
There are many reasons for this reaction, some well documented, some theorized and speculative and many that are unknown. Some of the documented reasons for differing levels of anxiety in certain people are:
Genetics
Some people appear to be born more anxious than others. Research has suggested that these problems could be inherited genitically. This is rather speculative and cetainly does not account for a person that generally never worries suddenly developing anxiety and becoming uncomfortably anxious for no apparent reason.
Post-Traumatic Stress
This could be caused by comething dramatic like a serious accident or illness, or the death of a loved one. Anxiety brought on by PTS disorder can last for months or even years and can appear in situations that are not even remotely connected to the traumatic incident that caused the problems. Anxiety form PTS is very unpredictable.
Recreational Drugs
Anxiety and panic can be a side-effect of using drugs such as LSD, ecstacy, amphetamines and cannabis. These anxietal symptoms can last long after a person has stopped using the drug. Common stimulants like caffiene can trigger anxiety, as can excessive use of alcohol.
Everyday Worries
If a person is prone to anxiety, events such as moving house or worrying about work can have long lasting effects. Even after the original stressful situation has past, the anxiety condition can remain. If a person has had a troubling experience in the past, anxiety can reappear if the person is placed in similar circumstances again, even if it is long after the original event.
Anxiety Itself
An anxiety sufferer can become trapped in a viscious circle whereby they trigger an episode of anxiety just by worrying about the anxiety itself. Situations that have led to an episode previously become embedded into the mind and the person is likely to expect, and then bring on, anxiety if placed in a similar situation. These people worry about their anxiety, which can bring on anxiety. They feel trapped and worry that they may never be rid of the symptoms, which again, creates more anxiety.
